Description: The Republic of Slovenia is in Central Europe and has only a short 46.6km coastline to the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, between Italy and Croatia. Slovenia borders with Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast and with Croatia to the south and southeast.

Climate: Mediterranean climate on the coast, continental climate with mild to hot summers and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east.

Population:  2,009,245 (2007 estimate)

Ethnic Diversity: 83.1% Slovene / 2% Serb / 1.8% Croat / 1.1% Bosniak / 12% Other.

Languages:  Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian.

Economy: A model of economic success and stability for the region, Slovenia was the first of the 2004 European Union entrants to adopt the euro. With the highest per capita GDP in Central Europe, Slovenia has excellent infrastructure, a well-educated work force, and a strategic location between the Balkans and Western Europe. In March 2004, Slovenia became the first transition country to graduate from borrower status to donor partner at the World Bank. In December 2007, Slovenia was invited to begin the accession process for joining the OECD.
